Bonifacio and its surrounding region in the southern tip of Corsica are world-famous for the wonders they have to offer. Centuries of history between the stones

Visiting Bonifacio

The unchanging old town is just made for visitors. During your time there, take the Escalier du Roy d'Aragon (or the King of Aragon's Staircase), which will lead you to a sparkling seashore. According to legend, this unusual passageway was built by Spanish troops in just one night in 1420. Higher up, the citadel stands as something of a watchtower and opens up its narrow paths for you to admire the breathtaking views from its sentry walk. Explore the sumptuous white tombs of the Cimetière Marin and the impressive Bastion de l'Étendard, a fortified masterpiece that shows off "1,000 years of Bonifacian history". The town's religious heritage is not to be outdone, however, as there are no fewer than seven churches scattered around the town. They take you on a journey through the ages with their Gothic, Romanesque and Neo-Byzantine designs. Even today, local people are still fervently involved in the religious brotherhoods that have existed since the 13th century.
