Bonifacio

As you drive towards Bonifacio there is a moment when everything suddenly switches from grey to white, and from granite to limestone. An unforgettable moment when everything changes. In the countryside, you are surrounded by thousand-year-old olive trees. Feel the sea breeze caress your face. Enjoy stunning sea views. In the surrounding countryside, marvel at the dry stone walls constructed with small flat slabs placed one on top of the other, forming works of art that have acquired a unique patina with time. Look out for the ingeniously built dry stone shelters in gardens with their stone roofs that once housed farm workers. As you approach Bonifacio in the extreme south, the fortified city rises up as if on a limestone table sheltering its three thousand inhabitants. The sea surrounds this peninsula at the extreme southern point of Corsica, and this is where you will find the Sperone Golf Course?s most famous hole. Eight-metre high cliffs overlook it. Houses cling to the cliff edges. A Vauban-style bastion and fortifications that surround the city, a monumental gate and a drawbridge that is no longer raised are just some of the high points of this city steeped in history, which was founded in 800 A.D. A 1.5 km long natural harbour protects fishing boats and, during the summer season, welcomes some of the most beautiful pleasure boats in the world. No, you're not dreaming, you're in Bonifacio!
